So you have decided to bring home your very own rabbit, now what? Here are some tips we have put together to help make the transition from our facility to your home as comfortable and stress free for you and your new rabbit.
We recommend that you get your enclosure, feed, water systems, and all supplies you are going need setup prior to picking up your rabbit. The rabbit should be able to transition into its new home as easily and stress free as possible. You will also want to give the rabbit some time on the first day to figure out their new surroundings, so moving things around and assembling the enclosure with the rabbit in there is not ideal. Enclosures will vary depending on your preferences.
We ask that you arrive with your own pet carrier to transport the rabbits. A carrier suitable for a cat or small dog will work just fine. The carrier should be sturdy and secure and provide a safe and quiet spot for the rabbit to hide during this stressful time. We will provide a small amount of hay to line the bottom of the carrier with to absorb any accidents and provide the rabbit with a familiar food to nibble on
What you decide to feed your rabbits will be up to you and there are several options available. We feed a mix of pellet and hay. You will be sent home with a small amount of the pellet that the rabbits have been eating so you can slowly transition over to your feeding plan. There are several options for commercially available rabbit pellets in the area. We are currently feeding Purina Performance available from Sharpe Farm Supplies in Fergus. Always introduce new foods slowly and in moderation. Rabbits digestive systems need time to adjust to new foods.
Rabbits require 24/7 access to fresh and clean drinking water. Water plays a huge role in the rabbits digestion and it is said that they will stop eating if they run out of water. If your rabbitry is located somewhere that gets down to freezing temperatures, you will need to check water bowls every 12 hours to ensure they have not frozen over.
Rabbits are a very clean animal and are constantly grooming themselves. They only real grooming maintenance they may require is a nail trimming once and awhile. They also are unlikely to put up a fight if you want to brush them.
If you are local to us, there are several great businesses in the area where you can purchase everything you need for your rabbitry. Fergus Pet Corner, Grandview Rabbitry, Sharpe Farm Supplies, are some of our favourites. We have also started to gather some items in our amazon affiliate store. Items purchased from here will be the usual Amazon prices, but we will earn us a small percentage for the sale referral.
If you have any questions about caring for your rabbit we will be more than happy to help you out the best we can for the life of your rabbit. Feel free to reach out anytime. However keep in mind we are not veterinarians and you should always seek professional help for serious health conditions.
We would much rather see our rabbits returned to us than have them end up neglected, abandoned, or dumped off at the humane society. If it is not working out let us know and we will work something out. Also we will avoid selling any rabbits as pets around Easter for the above reasons. A pet rabbit is a long term commitment and you should make sure you have done your research and are fully prepared to care for the animal for the duration of its life.
